Matthew Slaughter has been called a bright young star in international economics. He is a former member of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President and a writer, researcher, and associate dean of the MBA program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Approachable and enthusiastic, Slaughter makes practical sense of demographics and data for non-academics in presentations and public interest articles for publications like the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times.  He frequently advises corporations and associations on market opportunities outside the US, the effects of governmental policies on their industries, and the policies and practices of global leaders including China, India, and Japan. While with the CEA in Washington, he gained first hand knowledge of the process by which government makes economic policies, and uses this insight to advise organizations on future trends in regulation, taxation, spending, and trade. In addition to his role as associate dean, he is the Signal Companies professor of management at Tuck, as well as co-director of the flagship executive-education program Global Leadership 2020. In that role, Slaughter helps leaders develop the mindset and skills needed to lead strategy and operations in a global environment, with a focus on emerging markets, finance, and future trends.

Slaughter’s field of expertise is economics and politics of globalizations, the labor-market impacts of international trade, investment, and immigration, and how multinational firms can best structure their global operations for success. He is a frequent keynote speaker to many audiences in the business and policy communities and he has testified before both chambers of the U.S. Congress. His ideas are widely featured in business media such as Business Week, the EconomistFinancial TimesNew York TimesNewsweekTimeWall Street Journal, andWashington Post. He has appeared on several TV and radio programs such as CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight and NPR’s All Things Considered. For many years he has consulted both to individual firms and also to industry organizations that support dialogue on issues of international trade, investment, and taxation.

Slaughter received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Notre Dame in 1990, and his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994. He has been on the faculty of Dartmouth since 1994. He is also currently a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, an academic advisor to the McKinsey Global Institute, and a member of the academic advisory board of the International Tax Policy Forum.
